I have stayed here a handful of times and I love the smart retro vibe of the décor. All rooms are spacious and include a full kitchenette, with complimentary continental breakfast in the lobby. Upstairs, your room is stylish and modern with a twist that preserves the classic Old Portland architecture. The bathrooms are small, but that’s how they built them back in the day. Large windows let in plenty of natural light, waking you up gently.

We stayed in the spacious “Slater-Kinney” corner room and it was the perfect ending to a night filled with great food, drinks, and live music.

The Kex Hotel

If a hotel and a hip Icelandic hostel had a love child, it’d look a lot like The Kex. It’s the cool international cousin with stories to tell, design to awe, and a communal kitchen that churns out more than just meals – it churns out friendships. The best part? A social bar where the beer flows as generously as the conversation.
Located on Portland’s central east side, you are in close proximity to some of the city’s best bars and restaurants. And, it is just a short drive or bus ride away from downtown Portland across the river.
In case you haven’t already guessed, this property boasts European style with hostel options. The only other property of its kind is, in fact, in Reykjavik, Iceland. The hostel-style rooms accommodate up to 6 people, and for those who are social by day but love their privacy at night, en suite private rooms and rooms with shared bathroom are available.
While I’m not particularly keen on hostel set ups, what impresses me about the Kex are the inviting common spaces. A restaurant, library, and secret courtyard complete the well-rounded set up of this hotel.
